We all want to have the time to do the things we love. And we all dream about earning money with the things we love. But not many people do something to make it happen.
We started this blog to share our stories with you. We want to inspire people to do what they love. Travelling and getting to know new cultures is what we love, and to be able to do it we want to earn money online. We want to share with you how we do it, so that you can do the same.
But why start a blog?
For most people the first step is to start a blog. This is because it is a great place where you can share your stories and content that other people might be looking for. Good content is the main reason people stick around a blog.
But a blog also allows you to connect with your reader. The stories shared in a blog are from a personal view. And thanks to the comment section the reader is able to connect with the writers, ask questions… You can build a relationship with your readers, and that is what is most worth about a blog.
A blog if done well can turn into a full time income that will allow you to follow the life of your dreams. But it is important that the topic you choose to talk about in your blog you really are passionate about.
So in this post we want to share with you the first steps you need to take to start your blog.
1. Choose your blogging platform
There are many platforms where you can start your blog, such as Tumblr, Blogger, WordPress.. The one with the most users it WordPress. We also use WordPress and we recommend it. Why?
WordPress is very easy to use. It has millions of active users, so it has a community around that share tips, tools and ideas. It is really easy to set up and highly customizable. There are hundreds of themes to choose from and thousands of plugins to install.
But when choosing WordPress make sure you choose the self-hosted one. The first thing is that if it is a WordPress hosted site (or hosted by any other as well) your domain will look something like this yourdomain.wordpress.com instead of yourdomain.com. Other downsides are that you don’t really own your blog and that you have more limitations when it comes to monetising and content you upload.
2. Choose your host and domain name
Now that you have chosen to go with a self-hosted website you need a host. A host provides you the server space so that your site can be found on the internet.
Here there are also many options, one of the most famous one is probably blue-host. We are not using Bluehost at the moment, we are using iPage. iPage is probably the cheapest one in the market right now, with WordPress one click install and a free domain for the first year. We are very happy with it and will continue to use it.
So if you want to star with iPage go to home page and get started.
You can choose your new domain name, or if you already have one you can register an existing one.
Choosing your host also means choosing a name. You are going to get your domain so you need a short and catchy name. You want your readers to remember it easily. It can be your name if you are doing something personal, or it can be something related to what you are going to talk about.
Let your readers know what they can expect from your blog when they read the name. It is more likely that they click through if they know what are going to get. Make your name something brandable and intuitive.
Once you have your domain name fill in your information, you can choose to pay for 12 months, 24 or 36. Choose the best option for you, and if you don’t want your personal information to appear choose the domain privacy too.
3. Install WordPress and Choose your theme
With iPage you have a very easy one click install from WordPress. So you are all set to start your blog.
Now choose your favourite them in WordPress from the many available. With a bit of changes and personalising you will be set to start posting your fist content.
And don’t worry if you don’t know anything about web design or how WordPress works. It is very easy to use and very intuitive. I was a bit confused at the beginning but with one tutorial and a little bit of experimenting you get how it works really fast.
So once you have WordPress installed you log into your account. To do it yo go to yourdomain.com/wp-admin and then log in.
Afterwards you go to appearance to choose a theme. You can download the ones you like and try them out. Once you choose one, just click install to make it to your theme and start customising your site.
With the theme installed and the page customised you are ready to start your blog. You are ready to start creating great content. Make sure to at least have an about page and a contact page.
4. Write your first blog post
Now that you have your blog post all set, with your theme chosen and customised you can start putting content in. Great content is the key to success for a blog.
So go to the post site and press on add new. Now you are all set to start writing. It is very easy!
I recommend to download the Yoast SEO plug-in to make your website SEO optimised. It shows you what needs to be improved and makes it very easy to know if it is SEO optimised.
Now that you know how to start a blog you are all set to start your own blog and creating great content. In order to make your blog successful you need to be consistent, get a lot of traffic on the blog but again, the most important is awesome content so that your readers stick around.
