We all know that feeling when we are about to go on a trip. Days get closer and you start wondering what you are going to take, if it’s all going to fit, what do you need…
To make your life easier we have picked up some items that we believe are essential to any backpacker. This items will make your travels easier, and will save you in some situations.
Let’s get to them!
When travelling as a backpacker you won’t always be staying at the best places, or traveling in the best conditions. So most likely most of the nights you will fall into bed wanting a good night sleep.
That is why we recommend to always have some good earplugs with you. They will come in handy when staying in a hostel, where people may walk in and out while you are sleeping. Or if your hostel is in the middle of a party street, and that night you feel more like sleeping than partying.
Similar to earplugs, sometimes you will find yourself in situations where you will want to sleep, only that this time it’s going to be daylight what won’t let you sleep. Maybe in the hostel, or maybe day travel in bus…
In many countries you will only find a light curtain covering the window, and you will be fighting daylight. If you don’t mind the light to sleep maybe this is not for you. But if you do, definitely have one of these always with you.
I’m personally not a big fan of eye-masks, but I always have one of them with me. I am aware that they have saved me more than once.
3. Packing Cubes
Here are where packing cubes come in. This are the perfect thing to keep your things inside your bag organised. They come in a set, so you can decide what you put in each cube. That way you are always aware where your belongings are. This will make it easier to find things, since you will only have to look inside one cube.
4. Adaptor Plug
During your travels you will find yourself more than once in a country with a different plug that the one in yours. When this happens make sure to be prepared if you want to be able to charge your phone, camera or computer.
With this multi adapter you won’t have that problem anymore, here you will have the perfect fit for any situation.
5. Microfibre Travel Towel
We recommend to always take a towel with you. And since we know that there is not much space in a backpack, we recommend a microfibre towel.
This towels dry quickly and fold into a very small size so that it won’t take much space in your backpack. They are very versatile and you can use them as normal towel or as beach towel.
6. Clothes line
Washing is always a thing when you are travelling. You will have times where you will be able to wash as often as you want. But you will also find yourself in situations where you won’t be able to wash for a while.
That’s why having a clothes line with you is always a good idea. This will help in in many situations. Sometimes you wash, but where do you put all your wet clothes? What if you want to hand wash just a couple of pieces?
Just put up your clothes line anywhere you want, and there you go to dry all the clothes you want.
7. Sleeping Bag Liner
Here is where the sleeping bag liner comes into play. With this light sleeping bag you won’t have to worry about your body or clothes touching those hostel sheets or mattresses. And since it is very small, it won’t take up much space in your backpack.
8. Sarong or scarf
There are many situations where a sarong or scarf can come in handy. You can use it not only for the cold weather, but it could come also handy as a skirt or to use on the beach. It can also save you when visiting religious places, or to cover after a shower.
If you are in a beach place is also a must have, and they will save you from dirty floors. Flip Flops are the best shoes to keep your feed fresh.
10. Credit Card
Depending on the country you are from, you may have one card or another. Sometimes some cards don’t work well abroad.
That’s why is always important to have a credit card that will allow you to buy and withdraw money everywhere in the world. The best option is to get a credit card with travel miles reward. So at the same time that you are spending money, you are collecting miles for your next trip.
